Hollywood Screen Legend adds Oscar-winning touch to upcoming Tattoo TV commercial

Next week the Edinburgh Tattoo is set to launch a television advertising campaign across central Scotland featuring the voice work of Hollywood super-star Sir Sean Connery.
The TV commercial, inspired to support the sale of this year’s Tattoo DVD, shows a series of fast-moving clips from this summer’s hugely popular Castle Esplanade production and the almost instantly recognisable gravel voice of the 79-year-old Scottish movie star.
Edinburgh Tattoo Chief Executive & Producer, Major General Euan Loudon CBE said:
“We are delighted that Sir Sean has generously agreed to help support our activities which we hope will in turn also further strengthen our charitable endeavours.
There is no bigger voice than Sir Sean’s for that big marketplace impact.”
The 30-second commercial, created by West Linton-based production company EPM Production, launches on November 23rd and runs into early December.
EPM Production’s Managing Director, Kenneth Andrew remarked:
“Finding Compass Point Studios, in Nassau meant that Sir Sean simply slipped down the road to record his material and we were able to download the results and edit it, all within a few hours of the recording taking place. The addition of Sir Sean’s voice over lends a friendly persuasive tone to the overall focus of the commercial.”
Meanwhile, over 1,000 performers from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the United States and the United Kingdom are set to combine with highly sophisticated 21st century production technology for next summer’s spectacular Diamond Jubilee Tattoo season at Edinburgh Castle.

General Information

The Tattoo presents a host of international performers, military and civilian. Bands of all sizes and description have been joined by dancers, steel bands, flag-wavers, drill teams, zulus, camels, elephants, cavalry, motorcyclists, and police dogs. But at the heart of every Tattoo's universal appeal is the stirring sight and sound of the massed pipes and drums from the Scottish regiments.

Each year about 217,000 people attend the Tattoo, while another 100 million watch it on television. The word 'tattoo' in fact derives from the cry of inn-keepers in the Low Countries in the 17th and 18th centuries. At closing time, the fifes and drums of the local regiment would march through the streets, their music signalling a return to quarters, and the shout would go up - 'Doe den tap toe' ('turn off the beer taps').
From this beginning, a 'tattoo' became a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands. The range of music presented at the Edinburgh Tattoo is now as diverse as the countries represented; from pomp and circumstance to showbiz razzmatazz - with just about everything in between. Ending with a lone piper playing on the Castle ramparts the ambitious spectacle finishes on a spine tingling emotional note.

Scotland’s Minister to bid farewell to Tattoo performers bound for Australia

Around 30 musicians from the Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland together with Tattoo Chief Executive and Producer, Major General Euan Loudon, will be in attendance that morning. Culture Minister, Fiona Hyslop MSP said: “An iconic event like Edinburgh’s Military Tattoo helps put Scotland on the map and I’ve no doubt its presence in Australia will act as a superb advertisement for our country. The ambassadorial role performed by this cherished national institution supports the strengthening of links between our two nations”
Tattoo Producer, Major General Loudon, remarked: “This is one of the largest contingents of British Military musicians from Scotland and the UK ever to leave these shores. It provides an excellent opportunity to fly the flag Down Under, and, I hope, in the process, makes the necessary connection with the Australian people.” The Culture Minister is expected to hand the musicians a special Scottish gift on Wednesday which will be shipped Down Under for presentation to her Australian counterpart.

Military Tattoo Returns To Australia in 2010

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo Celebrating 60 Years of Valour, Mateship and Glory. Due to overwhelming popular demand, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo will return to Australia for performances at the Sydney Football stadium in February 2010. And the new production will be the biggest ever seen in the event’s six decade history.
The return visit – which is exclusive to Sydney – is produced by the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in association with the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust and supported by Events New South Wales. It follows the resounding success of The Edinburgh Military Tattoo – A Salute to Australia in 2005.
Organisers of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo went so far as to pronounce it “one of the very best Edinburgh Military Tattoos ever staged.”
The Tattoo, with 1500 performers, returns to Sydney next year as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations. Titled “The Edinburgh Military Tattoo – Celebrating 60 Years of Valour, Mateship and Glory” the event will take as its central theme the close relationship between Australian and British Defence Forces who have fought alongside each other in numerous conflicts.
“The Edinburgh Military Tattoo attracts the world’s best massed pipes and drums. Australians will see the biggest and best Tattoo ever staged, right here in Sydney” says Creative Director, Leo Schofield. “A centrepiece of the program will reflect the history and camaraderie between Australian and British Defence Forces.”
The show, which will be staged against the remarkable million dollar replica of Edinburgh Castle, will be even bigger than last time with an extra “theatrical flourish”, developed under the Tattoo’s new Chief Executive and Producer, Major Euan Loudon.
“In 60 years the world’s most famous Tattoo has left Edinburgh only twice. I can think of no better way of kicking off our diamond jubilee year in 2010 by returning to the city and country which opened their hearts to us so warmly when we visited Sydney last time-round,” said Major General Loudon.
Events NSW estimating that the Edinburgh Military Tattoo will bring in more than $A15 million into the State. This result is achieved through the great alliance between the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust and Events NSW – both show clearly and deliberately their ability to present the very best in international entertainment for the whole family.
Performance dates and times will be announced later this year along with details of the bands and highland groups appearing. However, it is confirmed that the wildly popular Top Secret Drum Corps from Basel in Switzerland will be back with an even more dazzling routine.

Pipes and drums

A pipe band is a musical ensemble consisting of pipers and drummers. The term used by military pipe bands, pipes and drums, is also common.
The most common form of pipe band in English-speaking and certain celtic-speaking countries, the Scottish pipe band, consists of a section of pipers, a section of snare drummers (often referred to as 'side drummers'), several tenor drummers and a single bass drummer. The entire drum section is known collectively as the drum corps. The tenor drummers and bass drummer are referred to collectively as the 'bass section' (or in North America as the 'midsection'). The band follows the direction of the pipe major; when on parade the band may be led by a drum major, who directs the band with a mace.
Standard instrumentation for a pipe band involves 6 to 25 pipers, 3 to 10 side drummers, 1 to 6 tenor drummers and 1 bass drummer. Occasionally this instrumentation is augmented to include additional instruments (such as additional percussion instruments or keyboard instruments), but this is typically done only in concert settings.
Pipe bands are also a long-standing tradition in other areas with Celtic roots, such as the regions of Galicia and Asturies in Spain, as well as other regions with Celtic influence in other parts of Europe.

Sir Terry Wogan vows to bring back the 'golden age of BBC variety' show

Sir Terry Wogan has vowed to bring back the 'golden age of BBC variety' with his new radio show live from BBC Radio Theatre.
The veteran broadcaster will host the two hour Sunday show on Radio 2, which will feature an 11 piece band and guests all performing in the Art Deco style Radio Theatre in Broadcasting House.
He said the new show – which will be live in front of a 350 seat audience – will hark back to the golden age of BBC variety shows.
“I got the idea when Take That were playing live, and as I passed I saw the long queue and I thought, great! The BBC doesn’t often use the Radio Theatre correctly, it needs to give Broadcasting House a bit of life, not just be a temple on a hill but a place to go. The live audience adds tremendously,” he told the Radio Times.
Sir Terry, 71, admitted that he still wakes up early despite hanging up his breakfast show headphones, but he did not mention tuning into Chris Evans, his replacement on the Radio 2 breakfast show.
He said: "I may wake round about six, but I don't get up. I lie and doze, this morning til nine".

BBC paid stars £230 million last year

The BBC paid its top stars - including Jonathan Ross and Graham Norton - £70 million last year, more than a quarter of its £270 million wage bill for presenters and contributors, the Corporation will disclose today.
But the broadcaster was accused of acting like the "duckhouse" gang of MPs for refusing to disclose the individual salaries of its top stars to a House of Commons spending watchdog yesterday.
The total salary figures will be published today in an attempt to quell a growing row over the BBC’s secrecy about stars’ pay.
But the corporation has refused to reveal the identities of its top earners, claiming it would breach the Data Protection Act.
Mark Thompson, the BBC director general, told the Commons Public Accounts Committee yesterday: “The danger is they won't want to work for us. We actually in most cases try to pay less than the market rate where we can – so releasing individual salaries could push costs up,” he said.

Ohter famous tattoo

One of the best known Tattoos is held on the Esplanade in front of Edinburgh Castle each August and forms the centrepiece of the annual Edinburgh Festival. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo was first staged in 1950; it combines the traditional sounds of the bagpipes and drums with the modern aspects of the armed forces. Another leading UK Tattoo is the Birmingham Tattoo held annually at the National Indoor Arena in November which has been attracting audiences to Birmingham since 1989. In 2008, The Windsor Castle Royal Tattoo was launched, held in the private grounds of Windsor Castle by permission of HM The Queen. The event's proceeds went to Royal British Legion to help support recently returned troops from battle. The event was held again in 2009.

Another well-known Tattoo was the Royal Tournament which was held annually in London from 1880 to 1999. The Royal International Air Tattoo is the world's largest military airshow, open to the public.

The indoor Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo is the largest annual indoor tattoo, featuring in 2007 over 2000 performers from around the world, including Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway. There is another military tattoo in Canada : The Quebec City Military Tattoo. This event is part of the Quebec City International Festival of Military Bands which takes place in August(14-24).

The largest tattoo in the United States is the Virginia International Tattoo, held every year in Norfolk, Virginia. Over 850 performers play traditional music and many international acts join every branch of the Armed Forces for a spectacular show.

One of the newer tattoos in North America is the Heartland International Tattoo in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, near Chicago. Originally staged at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center in DeKalb, Illinois, the Heartland Tattoo was created by theatrical and entertainment producer FunME Events in 2006. The Heartland Tattoo is staged in mid-April at the Sears Centre Arena.

The United States Air Force holds tattoos for many different events and celebrations, like base openings and closers, and special events like the 21st Annual Langley Tattoo. The Air Force's largest tattoo is held the last Friday of June each year at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. The 2008 tattoo there drew an estimated 75,000 people. It featured country singing star Charlie Daniels. The 2009 event will be June 26 and feature aircraft flyovers and music by country singer Aaron Tippen.

Origin of military tattoo

The original meaning of military tattoo is a military drum performance, but nowadays it sometimes means army displays more generally. It dates from the seventeenth century when the British Army was fighting in the Low Countries (Belgium and The Netherlands). Drummers from the garrison were sent out into the towns at 21:30 hrs (9:30PM) each evening to inform the soldiers that it was time to return to barracks. The process was known as doe den tap toe (old-Dutch for "turn off the tap"), an instruction to innkeepers to stop serving beer and send the soldiers home for the night. The drummers continued to play until the curfew at 22:00 hrs (10:00PM).

Over the years, the process became more of a show and often included the playing of the first post at 21:30 hrs and the last post at 22:00. Bands and displays were included and shows were often conducted by floodlight or searchlight. Tattoos were commonplace in the late 1800s with most military and garrison towns putting on some kind of show or entertainment during the summer months. Between the First World War and the Second World War elaborate tattoos were held in many towns, with the largest in Aldershot.
